Who we are

Sail Crossings is a community registry for ocean passage sailors, operated by Eric and Mika. You can reach us via the feedback form.

What we collect and why

When you log a crossing, you may provide:

  • Crossing details — passage, route, dates, distance, boat type. This is the core of the registry and may be shown publicly.
  • Name or alias (optional) — appears on your diploma and may be shown publicly alongside your crossing. You can use a first name, a nickname, or a boat name instead of your full name.
  • Email address (optional, required if you provide your full name) — used to send your crew code and to verify data deletion requests.
  • Boat details (optional) — make, model, length. May be shown publicly.

If you submit feedback via the feedback form, we collect the message and optionally your email.

Anonymous submissions: If you do not provide a name or email, your submission contains no personal data. In that case, GDPR data subject rights (such as erasure) do not apply, as we have no way to identify you.

Where your data is stored

Submissions are stored in Supabase (PostgreSQL database hosted on AWS infrastructure in the United States). Emails are delivered via Resend (also US-based). By submitting, you acknowledge that your data is processed outside the EU.

How long we keep it

Crossing records are kept indefinitely as part of the registry — that permanence is part of the point. If you provided an email, you can request deletion at any time (see below).

Your rights (GDPR)

If your submission contains personal data (email address or full name), you have the right to:

  • Access the data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request erasure of your data

To exercise these rights, contact us via the feedback form with your boat name, route, and approximate date — or your crew code if you have one. We will verify and respond within 30 days.

Cookies and local storage

We do not use tracking cookies or analytics. We use your browser's localStorage to temporarily save a draft of your form so you can resume it later. This data stays on your device and is automatically cleared after 30 days. No third-party tracking is involved.

Email

If you provide your email, we use it to send your crew code. If you opt in, we may also send occasional updates about Sail Crossings. You can unsubscribe at any time by contacting us via the feedback form.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we'll update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the site constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
